Professional development for staff working with Looked After Children in schools
There is now a statutory requirement for every school in England and Wales to have a Designated Teacher for Looked After Children. This offers a genuine opportunity for schools to focus on enhancing the education of some of their most vulnerable children.
According to guidelines, Designated Teachers need to have a deep knowledge and understanding of the needs of children in public care and be able to transmit that knowledge to colleagues and others in the network around the child. It is therefore essential for those taking on this role to have access to the highest quality training which:
- Specifically addresses the effects of trauma on the development and behaviour of children
- Evaluates interventions that enable traumatised children to recover
- Provides examples of support strategies to promote resilience in the network around the child
