STRATEGIC PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE DESIGNATED TEACHER
This qualification addresses the professional development needs of Designated Teachers, enabling them to perform their crucial role as a resource and advocate for looked after children as well as a central point in the network around the child.
This qualification has been developed by Akamas
in partnership with the British Association for
Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) to address the
professional development needs of Designated
Teachers for looked after
children.
Following the introduction
of the Children and Young Persons Act 2008, every
school is now required to have a Designated
Teacher. Draft guidance has made it clear that
Designated Teachers are required to have a deep
understanding of the needs of the most vulnerable
children - those in public care.
Part
of the Designated Teacher’s role is to transmit
this understanding to colleagues in school and to
others in the network around the child. They also
need to understand the network itself, and to be
able to act as a central figure in ensuring that
everyone involved can support the education of
the child or young person.
The
knowledge base needed for this role is
substantial. Akamas has been delivering
successful online BTEC qualifications for years,
enabling busy people to gain meaningful
professional development. Impact evaluation has
shown that this knowledge gained through online
learning makes a difference in practice, and
improves outcomes for vulnerable children.
