SUPERVISING FOSTER CARE: PROMOTING AND MANAGING THERAPEUTIC FAMILY LIFE
This unique course uses a mixture of face-to-face
and online learning to address the role of the
Foster Care Supervisor in the context of
standards for the management and training of
Foster Carers.
Content and Structure
The course consists of one day of face-to-face
training and an online module which includes
access to supporting online resources for up to a
year.
- Session one: Supervising therapeutic
families
- Why children looked
after in public care should be recognised as
traumatised children.
- What traumatised
children and young people need in order to
recover.
- The role of the
supervisor in promoting and managing therapeutic
family care.
- Producing a personal
plan for supervision of a therapeutic family
- Session two: Supervising learning
- What the standards say.
- The challenges and
benefits of applying standards to training in
foster care.
- The role of the
supervising social worker.
- Assessing learning
needs and planning to meet them.
- Supervising
learners.
- An online module
- This module enables
supervising social workers to transfer learning
on the face-to-face course into practice and gain
experience of the online learning
environment.
- It includes research, case
studies and articles that social workers can use
to enhance their work with foster carers and
develop themselves as assessors of learning.
Mapped to CWDC Occupational
Standards, this course can contribute to CPD and
provide evidence towards an A2 Award.
Learning Outcomes
This course will enable participants:
- To understand what traumatised
children need in order to recover and adapt.
- To explore what foster carers need
from supervision so that they can provide a
therapeutic family experience for children and
young people.
- To identify the challenges and
benefits of applying standards in foster care
training.

foster carers and their families.

supervision of enabling and supporting foster
carers to learn.
