This course covers attachment, the development of self-regulation and helping children to recover from, and adapt to, acquired impairments.

Session one: Attachment, trauma and child development
- Trauma and traumatic stress
- Spontaneous recovery from trauma
- What happens if children are not able to recover from trauma?
- Recovery from and adaptation to post traumatic disorders
- Stabilisation: safety, learning about trauma. Words for feelings
- Integration: physiology, feelings and cognitive reconstruction
- Adaptation: social connectedness, self- esteem and the capacity for joy
- Implications for practice

Learning Outcomes
This course will enable you:
- To recognise the impact of overwhelming stress on child development
- To relate self-regulation of stress, mood and impulse to behaviour throughout childhood
- To think about strategies for enabling children to recover from acquired developmental impairments
- To think about strategies to promote resilience by enabling children to adapt to acquired developmental impairments
