PROTECTING CHILDREN: DEVELOPING BASIC AWARENESS
A 5-10 hour course for anyone coming into contact with children and families, providing an introduction to the most important issues in child protection.
This online course provides an introduction to key issues in safeguarding children. It offers employers and local authorities an easy and accountable way to ensure that everyone who needs it has been provided with vital awareness training.
Target Audience
Anyone whose work, whether paid or voluntary, brings them into contact with children and families. This includes:
- Sports coaches
- Hospital porters
- School caretakers
- Youth group leaders

Content and Structure
MODULE 1
Developing awareness of child protection and child abuse
Why children need protecting
- Caring adults, abusing adults and protective adults
- What does the law say?
- Overcoming barriers to protecting children.
- Managing feelings in order to become a protective adult.
What child abuse is
- Abuse and neglect lead to significant harm.
- What adults do, or fail to do, that causes significant harm to children
- Signs and indicators of abuse.
MODULE 2
Appropriate responses if you think a child may be being harmed
When to tell someone if you think a child might be being harmed
- Responding to what a child might tell you.
- The importance of immediate recording.
- Protective adults are alert for signs of harm and report suspicions and concerns.
- The importance of rapid reporting of disclosure and of suspicions.
Who to tell
- Each individual holds one piece of the jigsaw.
- Reporting to your manager or designated person.
- Direct reporting if necessary to avoid delay.
- Getting advice if there is uncertainty about what has been noticed.
- Who to inform about known or suspected child abusers.
- Local arrangements: what happens in your area?
How to tell them what they need to know
- Making a referral
- Looking after yourself when dealing with issues of child abuse
Assessment
At the end of each section of the course, students complete an online test to ensure that they have fully understood the course content. On completion of the course, each student receives a personalised certificate of achievement.

This course is available in the following ways:
- Annual licence: high volumes of users managed via the SOLA system.
- Block booking: limited users managed via the SOLA system. (minimum 5 course places at Level A or Level B).
