TREATING COMPASSION FATIGUE

Sometimes called secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue describes the traumatic effect and the toll that helping those suffering with PTSD can have on the helping professional. The objective of this book is to aid the identification, assessment, and treatment of compassion fatigue and this is done over eleven chapters, each from distinguished researchers in the field.

There exists a 'cost of caring' for others in emotional pain. Sometimes called secondary traumatic stress, this concept is used to describe the traumatic effect and the toll that helping those suffering with PTSD can have on the helping professional. This book builds upon the previous volume edited by Figley in 1995, Compassion Fatigue: Coping With Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder in Those Who Treat the Traumatized (Brunner/Mazel).
