Learning Outcomes
To achieve this unit a learner must:
- Analyse the needs, in relation to
prevention and treatment of secondary traumatic
stress disorders, of the network supporting a

- Produce a strategic plan to reduce

Prevention of secondary
traumatic stress disorder
- Training: understanding the disorder;
increasing resilience and reducing vulnerability;
enhancing stress management skills; the benefits
of professional development and personal

- Support: informal support including a
knowledgeable network and a trusted challenger;
formal support including peer groups, mentoring,
and telephone help
- Supervision: formal professional supervision;
peer supervision; performance monitoring and
appraisal; professional consultancy
Treatment of secondary
traumatic stress disorder
- Recovering physiological self-management:
recognising that treatment is needed; recovering
the ability to relax; self-monitoring to prevent
recurrence
- Psychological therapies: treatment for
cognitive distortions, behavioural problems or
relationship difficulties; therapy for triggered
responses to childhood trauma
- Other therapeutic interventions: specific
treatments for traumatic stress disorders ;
treatment for physical illnesses resulting from
the stress; family therapy; alternative
therapies
